Daytime Soaps: D.C. Douglas

Soap acting usually gets a bad rap for being overly emotional and, well, operatic. After having filled in as “that average looking guy who helped to nominally move the plot along but is otherwise personality-less,” I have witnessed these contract players at work. They’re pretty amazing.
They get up at 5 am, have a two page monologue thrown at them while in make-up and then they’re on-camera an hour later crying on cue over the most ridiculous things. That’s freakin’ impressive! (Though I can cry on-cue, too. It’s when I think of the career I could’ve had… Hold me.)
DC met Cady McClain in acting school in ’86. He wanted to date her but she was 17 and her mom was at every rehearsal.

Soap operas

We all know actors can have varying degrees of quality with the jobs they get. One area that gets laughed about a lot are soap operas. But there is an art to doing them. I have had many chances over the years to dabble around in them.

The Young & The Restless

The first time I was on The Young & The Restless was in 1996. This is the only soap that has cast me in recurring roles. First, as the good natured mullet clerk who testifies in a Genoa City courtroom. Then I had the best character arc in 2014 as a hired white collar mafia guy named Kurtz who tries to blackmail Tristan Rogers (Colin Atkinson) and Jess Walton (Jill Fenmore).

The Bold And The Beautiful

I have popped onto this show often since 1997.
Most recently as a kind doctor with little character or backstory taking care of Ashleigh Brewer (Ivy Forrester). I also married Brook Logan and Ridge Forrester. Though the best part was hanging with John McCook who is a sweetheart.

Days of Our Lives

I appeared on Days of Our Lives recently, but my role was nothing to write home about… I also forgot to record it. Prior to that, I had been on it a couple of times in the early 90’s.

General Hospital

My first soap opera was General Hospital. I had silly hair and no sense of where the camera was. But acting with newcomer Crystal Carson was fun.
